This is to commemorate the 16 Days of Activism against women and child abuse marked on 25 November till 10 December.

The Westonaria SAPS together with other stakeholders hosted a successful 16 Days of Activism against Women and Child Abuse campaign on 26 November at the Speruperu informal settlement in Thusanang.

This was to commemorate the period which is celebrated from 25 November till 10 December.

According to Westonaria SAPS spokesperson Constable Thembi Masango, officers decided to have a talk with residents of the area in a bid to create awareness about violence against women and children.

“The purpose of this event was to educate people on what constitutes violence and how to report it.

“We want people not only to know about the16 Days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse but also know what to do when faced with situations of abuse.

“We still believe that knowledge is power, hence we decided to take a conversational approach where we discussed how they can approach us when they are victims of crime.

“Apart from that, we wanted to encourage people to also spread the message of the fight against women and children abuse and crime as a whole,” says Masango.

She adds that they discussed issues pertaining to reporting of criminal incidents and acknowledging women and children’s rights.
