Westonaria Local Municipality spokesperson Kgabane Madiehe has announced that the damage caused to public property during the three-weeks long violent protests in Bekkersdal is estimated to be R11,2 mi0llion.

Substantial damage was caused to public property as residents looted shops and damaged municipals building and other properties.

According to Madiehe, the figures are yet to be confirmed.

“What I can say on record at this point is that it would cost the municipality approximately R4,8 million to fix the community hall and the gymnasium that was destroyed.

“It would cost another R2,6 million and R3,2 million to fix the municipal offices and the city centre respectively.

“The mobile clinic alone would also cost another R600 000,” says Madiehe.
