Protest actions spread to Randfontein

Residents feel that the municipality is dangling a carrot in front of their eyes by not lifting a hand to improve their lives.

Service delivery protests are now spreading throughout Randfontein with residents of Oliver Tambo informal settlements in Brandvlei being the latest to take to the street in demand for basic services in the area.

This was on 23 September at approximately 4am.

During this time, residents blocked off the streets with burning tyres and stones in a bid to have their outcries heard

According to residents of the area, they demand proper service delivery in the form of housing, proper sanitation and the provision of water and electricity from the Randfontein Local Municipality.

Residents also say that they are fed up of having to live in shacks while there are vacant RDP houses nearby.

“Why is it that they can’t place us in those RDP houses.

“Ever since those houses have been built, the Randfontein Local Municipality remains mum about whether or not we will benefit from them,” says the Resident.

He adds that he together with other residents feel that the municipality is dangling a carrot in front of their eyes by not lifting a hand to improve their lives while they have the resources to do so.

According to DA Ward Councilor Peter Dick who to the violent scene to collect memorandum of demands, residents demand that the Randfontein Local Municipality Executive Mayor Sylvia Thebenare respond to their outcries in the next 21 days.

Failure to do so, they vow to intensify their protest action.

“All these people want is for them to be recognized.

“I have promised that I will take their demands to the Mayor and I will do just that,” says Dick.
