The theft of manhole covers has become a massive problem in Randfontein.

The KFC outlet on Main Reef Road was the latest to be hit by this phenomenon when six manhole covers were stolen from the KFC premises in the early morning hours of 14 June.

“We strongly suspect that perpetrators have been targeting us for a while now, as they managed to steal from us without being captured on our CCTV footage,” says KFC assistant manager Abraham Molekeng.

He adds that they have informed the police and the municipality about the incident.

“The open manholes around our premises poses a huge risk to our customers.

“We are forced to place crates and rubbish bins over the open manholes in order to prevent customers from falling inside.”

According to Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Lucky Chiya, the municipality has noted that the theft of municipal property has become rife and says that the municipality is doing all it can to clamp down on perpetrators.
