Public Protector to investigate problems

Previously Mandonsela was met with complaints about lack of medicine and short operating hours among other issues in medical facilities.

Gauteng communities now will have the opportunity to interact with the Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela on service delivery matters – particularly those relating to health care and poverty.

This forms part of her ongoing national stakeholder dialogue and public hearing campaign aimed at strengthening local government and the standard of service delivery.

The campaign started on 5 August and Madonsela will be visiting numerous communities throughout Gauteng to take note of these problems.

People will be able to voice their concerns about and challenges in the public health-care system and other issues of service delivery directly to the Public Protector.

Critical aspects that Madonsela is expected to focus on are those of infant mortality, management of health-care facilities, quality of health care and the resources thereof as well as the staff’s working conditions and other general health issues.

According to Madonsela’s spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi, this is to allow her to reflect on the challenges faced by the communities.

“Previously Mandonsela was met with complaints ranging from the lack of medicine in some facilities, short operating hours, lack of medical equipment, shortage of staff and patients being ill-treated by medical staff.

“The campaign also will be looking at whether there is a direct link between maladministration and poor health-care services,” says Masibi.

Those who do not get the chance to interact with Madonsela herself are urged to visit the Public Protector’s Gauteng Office at 181 Lara’s Place at the corner of Bree and Rissik Streets.

Alternatively they can contact Dinkie Dube on 011 492 2807/ 2806/ 2801.
