Silverstar is bringing you another Lekker Life experience with its inaugural Bavarian Christmas in July Festival, taking place from 3 – 7 July. This event will see Silverstar’s open parking area transformed into a winter wonderland filled with the same magic usually experienced at Christmas time.

The Bavarian Christmas in July Festival will showcase traditional German cuisine and celebrate some of the traditions and customs that are held in the Bavarian regions.

“I want visitors to experience good food, a variety of beer and the warmth of a traditional German festivity,” says George Georgiou, executive chef of Silverstar.

In Germany the enjoyment of beer is a very important part of the country’s culture and traditions.

Testament to this is Oktoberfest, a national celebration which has gained international exposure. This festival takes place annually in Munich and is devoted to the love of beer.

However Germany also offers a wide variety of traditional dishes to complement its many regions.

The Bavarian Christmas in July festival will see visitors experiencing some of the most popular traditional dishes eaten in Germany.

Chef George will be serving Eisbein mit Sauerkraut en kartofal saladen – cooked fat pork knuckles served with finely cut cabbage and a typical German potato salad. He will also be using his secret ingredients in the German dishes he will be serving.
Additionally exhibitors will be tantalising taste buds with all things ranging from cheeses, sausages, bratwurst and eisbein.
Some of the exhibitors include Edelweiss Catering that will be selling traditional German food and Laharna Farm – all the way from Worcester that will be selling organic olive products. Glenfair Beers will be offering Weizengold Weissbier – a traditional, top-fermented and unfiltered imported beer that originates from the heart of Bavaria. It is rich in flavour and brewed according to recipes handed down over generations since 1439.

Chef George offers a tip for those not familiar with German cuisine but who would be keen to try it; ”Mustard known as Senf is a very common accompaniment with sausages.

This can however vary in strengths with the most common version being Mittelscharf (medium hot), which is somewhere between traditional English and French mustard’s strength.

Horseradish is commonly used as a condiment or served on its own as a paste that has been enriched with cream (Sahnemeerrettich) or mustard.

This is mostly served with sausages and meats where traditionally only mustard may have been used.”

Winter warmers such as hot chocolate from Wiesenhof and glühwein from The Beverage Emporium will chase away the winter blues.

German chocolates from Beyers chocolates and confectionery such as fudge and doughnuts will satisfy those with a sweet tooth.

The Bavarian Christmas in July Festival also offers entertainment for the whole family. Bands such as Alter Irving, Dixie Hillbillies, Beeskraal and an authentic German band called Schnapps will be performing; the festival will also a feature a mini amusement park with some exciting rides to be revealed soon -which is sure to keep the children occupied.

The festival promises to be a family affair and for this reason Silverstar is giving families the chance to win a fun-filled weekend for a family of four to the value of R15 000 at the Southern Sun Silverstar hotel during the Bavarian Christmas in July Festival.
