Illegal dumping spreads in Randfontein

"Residents can't pollute the place like this and then turn around and complain about the town being filthy."

The Herald has been inundated with phone calls from residents who are fed-up with the illegal dumping taking place in Randfontein.

Acting on the information the Herald and local Ward Councillor Peter Dick decided to visit one of the many illegal dumping sites.

Residents’ claims were confirmed when a veld in Greenhills Extension 2 was found to be scattered with all sorts of rubbish. Used nappies, household rubbish and other items were strewn throughout the veld.

According to Dick, residents need to realise that such actions are against the town’s by-laws.

“People need to understand that they cannot dump rubbish wherever they want.

“There are several demarcated dumping sites in Randfontein and people should make use of them.

“Residents can’t pollute the place like this and then turn around and complain about the town being filthy.

“Yes, the municipality has a responsibility to keep the town clean, but residents also have the responsibility not to pollute it like this.

“We need to become active citizens and be the change that we want to see,” says Dick.

According to Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Lucky Chiya, illegal dumping in Randfontein is getting out of hand.

“We have realised that illegal dumping has become a real problem.

“We try to keep the town clean but illegal dumpers are setting us back.

“I urge anyone who come across people dumping rubbish where they are not supposed to, to inform us.

“It is against the law and they will be fined,” says Chiya.
