W/area police on a manhunt for ATM bombers

Suspects went to the ATM inside the shop, attached explosives to it and blew it open.

Westonaria police have launched a massive manhunt for four suspects who bombed an Absa ATM in Glenharvie, Westonaria on 25 July at approximately 7pm.

The men walked into a supermarket in Bainskof Street and two of them produced firearms.

They ordered the owner of the shop and the customers to lie down on the ground and threatened them at gunpoint.

Meanwhile, the other two suspects went to the ATM situated inside the shop, attached explosives to it and blew it open.

According to Westonaria SAPS spokesperson Constable Thembi Masango the suspects took the money inside the ATM and continued to ransack the shop.

“The also took airtime vouchers worth R4 000 and a carton of cigarettes as well as the owner’s cellphone,” says Masango.

She adds that the suspects then fled on foot and that luckily no one was injured during the robbery.

Police officers arriving at the scene found two empty AK47 cartridges alongside two empty cartridges for R5 rifles outside the shop.
