Close to 50 fires reported so far in August

Working on Fire Kishugu Joined Venture Gauteng revealed close to 50 fires have been reported in the 21 days of August. They further warn that more fires are expected in months to come.

Working on Fire’s Kishugu Joined Venture (JV) Gauteng warned that Gauteng has recorded 46 fires by August 21 this year.

According to JV provincial communications officer Parapara Makgahlela, the hot, dry, and windy weather conditions exacerbate the start of the wildland fires across the province.

“During the rainy season, massive fuel load was accumulated which is dry and easy to burn now.”

General manager in Gauteng Stephen Boyes added that landowners need to be vigilant as the critical stage of the fire season creeps in.

‘‘There is a spike in fire callouts which is an indication that the fire season is getting hectic and more grassland burning. Our teams remain on high alert and standby across the bases in the province. They are ready to be dispatched to save lives, protect livelihoods and properties. Fires are becoming more prevalent because of the dry, hot, and windy weather conditions,’’ he said.

To date, Gauteng has recorded a total of 129 fires since the start of the winter fire season which was fought by JV firefighters.

Boyes said an early preparation in fuel load reduction through slashing and burning fire breaks helps in mitigating the dangers of the wildland fires. He anticipates more fires in months to come.
