Community food garden to sell its produce at Tambotie

Randfontein's very own Carroll Shaw Memorial Centre will be selling its produce to the Checkers in Tambotie Mall on June 7 in a move that will empower the organisation.

Fresh and organically grown produce from 35 community food gardens will be available for purchase directly to the public at selected Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets on Wednesday, June 7.

The 35 community gardens in question include Randfontein’s very own Carroll Shaw Memorial Centre which will be selling its produce to the Checkers in Tambotie Mall on June 7 in a move that will empower the organisation.

What this means is that the produce ploughed by the centre will find its way into the homes of scores of residents and that’s thanks to this opportunity.

Sustainability Manager at Shoprite group Sanjeev Raghubir said the Market Day was established back in 2017.

“For the first time since Market Day’s inception in 2017, community food gardens in Lesotho will also be selling their produce directly to the public.

We’re very excited that Market Day keeps expanding and that we continue to support community food gardens to create sustainable livelihood opportunities in more ways,” said Sanjeev, who added that this will ensure food security in the communities.

In the past year, more than 2 700 community members were trained in sustainable food gardening and the community food gardens collectively produced a harvest of more than 31 500kg, providing almost 100 000 meals.

“By improving food security in the communities that we are a part of, we are almost making these communities more adaptive and resilient to a changing climate,” Sanjeev added.
