Weekend crimes: Man found murdered and a family held at gunpoint

Both crimes incidents occurred around the Bekkersdal area this past weekend.

A manhunt has been launched by the Bekkersdal Police for a group of suspects following a murder and robbery involving a family in two separate incidents which occurred around the policing area this past weekend.

According to Bekkersdal Police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the first incident occurred at about 10:30 on Friday, May 19.

The victim and his family [wife and kids from the East Rand] were busy performing a ritual with two traditional healers at an open veld near the N12 when they were accosted by two Zulu-speaking suspects.”

Lefakane said the suspects held them at gunpoint and instructed them to lie down and demanded the victim’s car keys.

“They took two cellphones [a Samsung S23 and an iPhone] and a laptop from inside the vehicle before fleeing in the victim’s silver VW Jetta with registration number FC 18 ZF GP.”

She added that the N12 remains a concern for the Bekkersdal Police and people are warned to exercise extra safety precautions when driving or walking along the N12.

In a separate incident, police were called to a scene at about 11:50 on Saturday, May 20 where the body of a 33-year-old Lesotho national, allegedly from Khutsong, was found with a gunshot wound. The motive for his killing is yet to be investigated.
