Another 173 criminals brought to book over the weekend; 49 illegal immigrants also nabbed

Police on the West Rand made 173 arrests during weekend operations, 49 of them involved illegal immigrants.

Police made a wave of arrests during weekend operations which started in the early hours of Friday, May 12 through to Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 14.

Joining our men and women in blue were members of the Gauteng Traffic Police, Mogale City Traffic Police, Crime Prevention Wardens, several sectors of community policing forums, and community patrollers.

West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana expressed his gratitude towards the members involved during the operations revealing that 173 suspects in total were arrested for the following crimes:

• Rape (one)
• Robbery with a knife (three)
• Common robbery (three)
• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (five)
• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and Theft (one)
• Common assault and armed robbery (one)
• Common assault under domestic violence (five)
• Common assault (one)
• Possession of substances suspected to be drugs (five)
• Theft (10)
• Fraud (three)
• Driving under the influence of alcohol (34)
• Drunk and driving and reckless and negligent driving (one)
• Pointing of firearm (one)
• Possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition (two)
• Possession of drugs (three)
• Dealing in drugs (three)
• Dealing in liquor without a license (eight)
• Possession of crystal meth (one)
• Possession of Nyaope (one)
• Possession of dagga (five)
• Dealing in dagga (one)
• Contravention of a protection order (eight)
• Contravention of a protection order and malicious damage to property (one)
• Warrant of arrest (one)
• Illegal mining (two)
• Possession of a dangerous weapon (one)
