West Rand Police intensify crime prevention in the district: 114 arrested

The arrests were made during crime prevention operations in the form of roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, stop and searches, and tracing of wanted suspects.

Police officers in the West Rand are intensifying their fight against crime and have arrested a total of 114 suspects in a space of three days.

This was during their crime prevention operations in the form of roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, stop and searches, and tracing of wanted suspects, which started on April 21 till April 23.

They were joined by other law enforcement agencies and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) patrollers across the district.

The arrests recorded are as follows:

• One for murder
• One for attempted murder
• One for common robbery
• Three for business burglaries
• Six for assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm
• Four for kidnapping and assault
• Ten for assault,
• Two for common assault
• Three for theft
• Three for business burglary
• One for fraud
• Two for perjury
• One for having an unlicensed firearm
• One for contravening a protection order
• One for defeating the ends of justice
• One for interfering with police
• Thirty-four for driving under the influence of liquor
• Two for dealing in liquor without a license
• One for dealing in dagga
• One for tempering with infrastructure
• Seventeen for having drugs
• Five for having dagga
• Two for having a dangerous weapon
• Three for having suspected stolen property
• One for having gold-bearing material
• One for having stolen copper cable
• One for having counterfeit money
• Four for shoplifting
• One for illegal mining.

All those arrested are expected to appear before their respective magistrate’s courts soon.

Meanwhile, West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana has vowed to continue ensuring that all who are found to be on the wrong side of the law are brought to book.

He further said that they will continue to strengthen and intensify police operations to deal with those dealing with illegal substances and recover illegal firearms that are constantly used in most crimes committed across the district.
