Resident steps in to fix more than 1 000 potholes

Piet Lottering has been a resident of Randfontein for 65 years and is going around town fixing potholes hoping to restore the town to its former glory.

A resident is not giving up on Randfontein just yet.

The Herald again spotted Piet Lottering and his team on Kenneth Road, Greenhills on Thursday, April 13 who said that this is the least he can do to ensure that motorists are safe on the roads.

“We are fixing the roads in the different areas of Randfontein simply because they are filled with potholes which have become a problem for residents and motorists alike. They are causing accidents and leaving motorists with damaged tyres. I’m doing this for the community but I also want to help the local municipality.

“We know that our municipality is already facing challenges with cable theft and the like and I thought maybe I can assist residents in the meantime with the potholes. I’m not doing this for any political party but for the residents of this town. I have been staying here for the past 65 years and never have I seen our roads this bad.

“Nobody can drive on such roads, and everybody is crying but no one wants to fix them so I get money from the public through donations. I am also sponsored by local businesses which help in repairing the potholes,” said Lottering.

He added that he uses the money he gets from local businesses and those who donate while driving by, to purchase the necessary material to fill the potholes.

Lottering added that he contributes to the labourers from his businesses who carry out the repairs and according to him, they have managed to repair a total of 1 114 potholes so far, in a space of one month.
