Assault, drunken-driving rife on the West Rand after 162 arrests
Another mass weekend police operation in the West Rand District yielded 162 arrests – most for assault, drunken driving, dagga, and shoplifting.

Police tightened their grip on criminal activity in the West Rand after securing 162 arrests through various operations conducted by law enforcement agencies between March 24 and 26.

According to West Rand District police spokesperson Sergeant Sabina Mashego, a detailed breakdown of the arrests are as follows:
• Three for murder
• One for attempted murder
• Thirteen for rape
• Three for fraud
• One for pointing a firearm
• One for having an unlicensed firearm
• Three for having an unlicensed firearm and ammunition
• One for hijacking
• One for hijacking and kidnapping
• One for kidnapping
• Two for child neglect
• Two for common robbery
• Eight for theft
• Four for having gold-bearing materials and bribery
• Five for having gold-bearing materials
• Seven for damaging infrastructure and theft
• Four for housebreaking and theft
• Four for having suspected stolen property
• One for having a copper cable
• Five for malicious damage to property
• Six for shoplifting
• Eleven for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm
• Five for common assault
• Three for common assault under domestic violence
• One for having a dangerous weapon as well as dagga
• Two for having dagga
• Four for having stolen property
• Fifteen for having dagga
• Twenty-three for drunken driving
• One for drunken driving and reckless and/ or negligent driving
• Four for dealing in liquor without a license
• Five for reckless and negligent driving
• One for having suspected stolen property
• One for dealing in dagga
• One for crimen injuria
• One for intimidation
• One for contravening a protection order
• Two for sexual assault
• Eight undocumented persons
All suspects are expected to appear in the various Magistrate Courts in the District soon
