West Rand Police operations yield 318 arrests

Police held various operations in the West Rand District the weekend before last. They arrested 318 people, most for drunken driving, followed by possession of drugs.

The weekend before last saw police in the West Rand continue operations in the fight against crime making a staggering 318 arrests in the process.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye, the arrests are detailed as follows:

• Five for murder
• Three for rape
• One for house robbery
• Four for robbery
• Two for armed robbery
• 14 for theft
• One for theft and pointing a firearm
• One for housebreaking and theft
• 26 for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm
• Six for assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm as well as domestic violence
• Two for common assault and domestic violence.
• One for sexual assault and assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm
• Seven for common assault and domestic violence
• Three for common assault, domestic violence, and malicious damage to property
• One for malicious damage to property and Domestic Violence
• Four for malicious damage to property
• One for drunken driving and assaulting a police officer
• 80 for drunken driving
• One for perjury
• Two for reckless and negligent driving
• One for reckless and negligent driving and culpable homicide
• 38 for possession of drugs
• 12 for possession of dagga
• One for possession of drugs and possession of a dangerous weapon
• Five for possession of a stolen motor vehicle
• 10 for possession of an unlicensed firearm
• One for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition
• Five for possession of an unlicensed firearm and dangerous weapon
• Two for possession of car-breaking implements
• Six for possession of suspected stolen property
• One for an illegal immigrant and possession of live ammunition
• Three for possession of gold-bearing materials and bribery
• One for kidnapping
• Three for kidnapping and assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm
• Four for conspiracy to commit crime
• 23 for dealing in liquor
• Three for dealing drugs
• One for flashing/ exposing genital organs and
• 24 undocumented foreign nationals

More arrests were also made for contravening protection orders, intimidation, shoplifting, possession of illicit cigarettes, illegal gambling, and drunkenness.

West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana welcomed the arrests and thanked all role players who participated in the operations.

He also extended his gratitude to community members for their support and urged members of the community to continue working together with the police to make sure that our community remains safe.
