This was along the N12 in Westonaria and R28 leading to Randfontein, where there is a high police presence, accompanied by traffic officers.

Speaking to the Herald at a briefing before the multidisciplinary operation, Carletonville Police station commander Brigadier Marinda Theron said it’s all systems go, and all officers will be hands on deck to clamp down on crime.

“We are five groups of officers and traffic officers from the different regions in the West Rand and we are going to target hotspot areas in Bekkersdal and Westonaria. We will be doing roadblocks with Mogale City-, Rand West City-, as well as Gauteng traffic officers. Hijackings of cars and trucks are very high on the N12 and R28 where people are also being robbed. Certain cars are doing this, and we would like to warn people of a white Toyota Quest hatchback, which is harassing people on the N12.

“There’s also a white VW Polo Vivo that is fitted with blue lights with bogus traffic officers dressed in uniform, who are robbing people and also conducting hijackings,” said Theron who added that the occupants of this vehicle are one female and two males.

She added that people must also be on the lookout for a grey VW Polo Vivo and a double cab that is synonymous with these crimes.

According to her, the officers will also be in other areas, enforcing the law.

“The other group will also focus on Westonaria Central Business District (CBD) Glenharvie and Hillshaven among others. We are also going to focus on house breakings, robberies, common robberies, and all types of crimes,” said Theron.

She also said that they are going to be visiting scrapyards in different areas – to check if they are still in line with the law.

Successes of this operation will be made available at a later stage.
