Murder suspect arrested for setting man on fire

A man appeared in the Randfontein Magistrate's Court earlier this week for the murder of another man last year. He set the victim on fire who later died in hospital.

Randfontein Police have made strides in a disturbing murder investigation by tracking down the suspect alleged to have set a man on fire. The victim later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Randfontein Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said the suspect was arrested last Thursday, March 9. The incident occurred on July 30 last year.

“We initially received a complaint from the hospital about a man who passed away. He was brought to the hospital at about 17:00 that fateful day having sustained burn wounds to his body. Through investigations, we were able to trace one male suspect, aged 37, who was arrested on March 9 this year for murder,” said Sergeant Hendricks.

She added that the suspect already appeared in the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday, March 13, and will make his next court appearance on March 23.

Randfontein Police station commander Brigadier Mashole Manamela is pleading with the community not to take the law into their own hands, as this may jeopardise the investigation of the case.

Randfontein Police detectives request the community to come forward with any information and to contact the investigating officer Sergeant Mzamo Magelane on 011 414 4329. Anyone with information can make use of the MySAPS App and can contact the Crime Stop number – 08600 10111 to report crime anonymously.
