Total of 151 arrests made during weekend operations: Most for assault and drugs

Another mass weekend police operation in the West Rand District yielded 151 arrests – most for assault, drugs, drunken driving, and undocumented persons.

Hundreds of suspects were arrested during operations involving police from across the West Rand District during the weekend.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane revealed that 151 suspects were nabbed during the operations that were held from 06:00 on Friday, February 24 to 06:00 on Sunday, February 26.

These operations are targeted at reducing crime and increasing police visibility to create a safe secure environment for the community. The successes include the arrests made during Operation Okae Molao which was conducted in the Kagiso policing precinct.”

Those arrested committed offenses such as the following:

• Murder – one
• Possession of hijacked motor vehicle – four
• Possession of unlicensed firearm – one
• Possession of ammunition – two
• Child neglect – one
• Assault with intent to cause grievous body harm – 15
• Assault with intent to cause grievous body harm under domestic violence – two
• Statutory rape – one
• Sexual assault – one
• Drunken driving – 16
• Reckless and or Negligence driving – two
• Housebreaking and theft – two
• Common assault – three
• Common assault under domestic violence – five
• Theft – four
• Malicious damage to property – six
• Possession of stolen property – 10
• Fraud – two
• Contempt of court –one
• Possession of drugs – 23
• Possession of dagga – one
• Possession of housebreaking implements – two
• Possession of a dangerous weapon – three
• Contravention of protection order – two
• Dealing in liquor without a license – five
• Intimidation – two
• Undocumented persons – 22
• Employing illegal immigrants – two
• Loitering – one
• Illegal gambling – four
• Trespass – one
• Shoplifting – four

West Rand District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana applauded all law enforcement agencies for their dedication and hard work to ensure that the perpetrators of crime are brought to justice.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear in various courts within the West Rand District soon.
