Greenfields Estate residents protest over electricity

More residents have taken to the streets, this time tenants of the Greenfields Estate, after they had gone without power for at least three days.

Greenfields Estate residents in Mohlakeng staged a peaceful protest on Monday, January 23 after being without power for approximately three days.

The estate is situated on Ralerato Street near Umphakathi Mall.

One of the tenants at the estate, Dumisani Mngomezulu, told the Herald they have lost a lot of food due to the lack of electricity in the area.

“From Thursday, January 19 after the storm our electricity went off – this is the second time that this is happening. We then approached the municipality seeking answers. Meanwhile, our food had already spoiled. The lack of electricity has also affected our water supply. We are heavily affected and fed up with not having power for so long,” said Mngomezulu.

By Tuesday, January 24, Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa said the power had been restored.

“The electrical department was dispatched to the affected area on Monday, January 23 and power has since been restored. The issue was the circuit breaker which got damaged during the heavy rains and load-shedding on January 19. The delay in repairs was caused by the fact that it takes time to order the parts and have them delivered,” Montshiwa said.
