Manhunt launched after brutal Bekkersdal CIT heist; security guards wounded

The escort vehicle was riddled with bullets and an unknown number of security officers hospitalised.

Police is hunting for a group of at least 10 suspects who targeted a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle on Flower Road near an open veld in Bekkersdal on Monday morning, January 23.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the CIT van was targeted next to the Spooktown informal settlement at about 11:05.

“A Fidelity ADT escort vehicle was found just off Flower Road with more than 18 bullet holes. During this time, the escort vehicle drivers were disarmed of their rifles. The CIT vehicle was found bombed approximately 500 metres away. Police also found a Mercedes-Benz which was used to ram into the cash van,” said Mathe, who added that the Mercedes-Benz had overturned and caught fire.

She added an unknown number of security guards were taken to a nearby hospital where they are receiving medical treatment.

Police launched a 72-hour activation plan which is the mobilisation of all resources to apprehend those behind this high-priority crime.
