Another 170 weekend arrests in district

West Rand cops made 53 illegal immigration arrests alone out of a total of 170 during this past weekend's Okae Molao operation.

With the festive season winding down, there was still no time for rest this past weekend, as police across the West Rand made another 170 arrests during the O Kae Molao Operation, which ran from Friday, January 13 at 06:00 to Sunday, January 15, 06:00.

The Bekkersdal and Westonaria precincts were the target this time around and according to West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane, the operation was set in place to create a better environment.

“These operations are targeted at reducing crime and increasing police visibility to create a safe and secure environment for the community.”

The 170 suspects in total were arrested for a range of offences including:

• Murder (4)
• Attempted murder (one)
• Rape (2)
• Assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (7)
• Assault with intend to cause grievous bodily harm under domestic violence (2)
• Common assault under domestic violence (9)
• Common assault and robbery (one)
• Illegal possession of ammunition (2)
• Housebreaking and theft (8)
• Drunken driving (10)
• Common assault and malicious damage to property under domestic violence (one)
• Malicious damage to property (five)
• Theft (11)
• Perjury (one)
• Tampering with essential infrastructure (4)
• Reckless and/or negligence driving (one)
• ATM bombing (one)
• Possession of explosives (nine)
• Stolen property (four)
• Possession of drugs (11)
• Possession of dagga (two)
• Dealing in drugs (one)
• Possession of ammunition and dagga (one)
• Possession of a dangerous weapon (four)
• Contravention of protection order (three)
• Dealing in liquor without license (three)
• Undocumented persons (Illegal immigration) (53)
• Employing illegal foreigners (one)
• Loitering (five)
• Shoplifting (four)

Acting West Rand District Police Commissioner Brigadier Xaba applauded all law enforcement agencies for their dedication and hard work to ensure that the perpetrators of crime are brought to justice.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear in various courts within the district soon.
