Stock theft is still a thorn in the side of communities across the West Rand District.

These were the sentiments shared by West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana, who said he was disturbed by the increasing number of stock theft cases reported around the West Rand District. According to Kekana, the Randfontein, Westonaria, Hekpoort, Carletonville and Fochville policing precincts are reported to be the most affected areas where stock theft is concerned in the region.

“Stock theft places an overwhelming burden on commercial and emerging farmers. Such actions also tend to affect the agricultural economy negatively,” Major Kekana emphasised.

He further urged farmers to be vigilant at all times, protect their livestock and shared the following tips:

• Brand and ear mark livestock as early as possible
• Keep an updated record of your livestock inventory
• Employ herders with clear identification and pay them well
• Visit your farm or cattle post regularly
• Actively participate in farmer’s committees and other crime prevention initiatives
• Maintain good relations with your neighbours, for them to watch over your farm when you are away
• Keep fences and gates in good condition
• Report all incidents of livestock crime to the police as soon as possible to enable the police to investigate the cases before quality evidence is destroyed

Kekana added people need to come forward with any information that can assist in curbing the widespread of stock theft.
