Municipality springs into action this festive season; potholes across town targeted

Service delivery became a reality across Rand West City this past festive season when the municipality tackled potholes.

Municipal workers got their hands dirty and was hard at work throughout the festive season by repairing some of the dreadful potholes in and around town. They even addressed some of the shortcomings of their infrastructure including damaged electrical cables.

Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa confirmed they had sent out a schedule regarding the areas that they were tackling to ensure service delivery was a reality. The areas they attended to included Greenhills, Mohlakeng, Toekomsrus, Bekkersdal and Simunye.

“We are aware of the fact that the recent heavy rainfall lead to flooding, damage to property and infrastructure, loss of crops and livestock. Power outages caused by these heavy rains have been taken into consideration and at some point, these unplanned power interruptions came as a result of cable fault, theft and even damages by third parties as well as severe climate conditions such as lightning.

“The municipality endeavours to maintain all its electrical infrastructure in good condition but due to cable faults and theft as well as thunderstorms, the municipality had very little influence. However, a plan has been developed to address these issues. Blockage of storm water drains was due to flooding and had a negative impact on our roads.

“We are also aware of the efficiency of the drainage system being slow and decreasing and this caused damage to surrounding areas,” Montshiwa admitted. He further added that most of the outlined challenges were attended to in December.
