Weekend arrests in Gauteng more than 1 300: 211 were made in West Rand District

National police revealed that 211 people were arrested in the West Rand District over the weekend (1 300 in Gauteng).

Police in Gauteng remain resolute in the fight against crime and to ensure that people in the province are safe and feel safe.

This past weekend, more than 1 300 people were arrested throughout the province during various crime-prevention operations which included roadblocks, raiding taverns, performing stops-and-searches, and while the detectives were tracing wanted suspects.

Approximately 400 of these suspects were arrested in the Johannesburg District where the Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, led the integrated Operation Okae Molao in Alexandra on Saturday, August 27.

During this operation several people were arrested for different crimes such as driving while under the influence of alcohol, possession of unlicensed firearms, and dealing in and possession of drugs. Others were arrested when detectives traced suspects wanted for offences that include rape, murder, assault, housebreaking and theft, armed robbery, fraud, sexual assault, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Furthermore, 454 people were arrested in the Ekurhuleni District; 253 suspects were apprehended in the Tshwane District, 211 in the West Rand District, and 69 in the Sedibeng District.

The police also seized unlicensed firearms, drugs, dangerous weapons and liquor at illegal shebeens.

Some of the suspects were released after paying fines while others had appeared in various magistrate’s courts since Monday, August 29.
