Five arrested in connection with fire at dewatering plant

They were among the more than 150 people who were arrested for different crimes on the West Rand between August 12 and 14.

Five people were arrested on Saturday, August 13 in connection with a fire that allegedly started at the sludge dewatering plant in Westonaria.

At about 09:00 police were called out to the scene of malicious damage to essential infrastructure.

The officers found security guards on site who led them to where the suspects were hiding. The suspects tried fleeing on foot but were stopped in their tracks. According to the police, the five were then arrested and detained.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. Police are also investigating whether the suspects can be linked to other crimes.
