Education MEC launches online admissions system in Mohlakeng

As of Friday July 22 at 12:00, over 165 000 Grade 1 and 8 applications were successfully processed by the Online Admissions System

To mark the opening of the application period for Grades 1 and 8, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi was at Ramosa Community Hall in Mohlakeng on Friday July 22 to assist parents to apply.

“The 2023 online admissions system will close at midnight on Friday August 19 and it will now follow a single application process, allowing all applicants to apply to Grade 1 and/ or Grade 8 at the same time during the application period,” said Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona.

He said the 2023 online admissions system experienced a challenge with Google Maps when the application period for Grades 1 and 8 opened on the first day. “The GDE online admissions system was temporarily restricted by Google Maps due to reaching a maximum of 6 000 requests per minute, which resulted in parents not being able to view and select schools when applying.”

He added that this challenge was resolved effectively within 30 minutes after the system had opened at 08:00, and parents were able to proceed with their applications.

As of Friday July 22 at 12:00, over 165 000 Grade 1 and 8 applications were successfully processed by the Online Admissions System.”

Mabona urged parents and guardians to either upload the certified copies of the required documents onto their system, or submit them at the schools they applied to within seven school days.

“We sincerely apologise to parents and guardians for the inconvenience they encountered when our system opened for applications. We thank our technicians for swiftly resolving the matter, which has led us to processing a massive amount of successful applications on the very first day,” said Lesufi.

Parents are also encouraged to visit their District offices and Decentralised Walk-in Centres to be assisted with applications. For further assistance, applicants can call the GDE Contact Centre on 0800 000 789 or send a message on WhatsApp to 060 891 0361.
