Woman attacked: Youngster trying to help stabbed and killed

A young man was stabbed and killed after trying to help a woman during a gender-based violence incident.

A 46-year-old handed himself over to the Bekkersdal police a week after allegedly stabbing and killing a man aged 26.

Bekkersdal police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said the incident occurred near a local tuck shop at about 20:00 on Sunday, July 10.

“It’s alleged the victim and a friend were walking to a shop when they witnessed a man assaulting a woman. He asked the man to stop what he was doing and they continued walking.

After a few minutes the attacker pounced on the victim and allegedly accused him of interfering in his private matters.

“He took a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times in his chest before fleeing on foot. The victim was rushed to the clinic where he succumbed to his injuries.”

She added that a case of murder was registered and the suspect had been on the run since. However, the suspect handed himself over at about 10:00 on Sunday, July 17.

“Domestic violence is the main contributor to gender-based violence, therefore let us break the silence and report domestic violence to stop the circle,” said Station Commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela.

The suspect is expected to make his brief court appearance soon.
