Rand West City beaten by in-form Munsieville team

The 21st edition of the annual Greater Randfontein Easter Soccer Tournament (GREST) was won by a team from Mogale City.

Mogale City’s Galacticos from Munsieville were in a serious winning mood at the 21st edition of the annual Greater Randfontein Easter Soccer Tournament (GREST) at the Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium on Easter Monday.

They not only won the tournament, they impressed by thrashing Rand West City contenders Four Stars 3–0 in the semi-final before beating Mohlakeng House Party 5–4 via penalty shootout. This despite the presence of star players in the Rand West City duo’s corner.

The games were streamed live on Vision View satellite radio and SuperSport, and to add more to the razzmatazz, once again local business man Oupa Rigamani and GREST local organising committee chairman Abe Montoedi delivered the trophies by helicopter.

From the outset Galacticos showed grit and determination to thwart all the attacks from Four Stars. However most of the soccer fanatics and pundits who watched this game cited the introduction of top-name stars like Oupa Ace Manyisa, a former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns player; Karabo Stich Tshepe who used to play for TS Galaxy; Roger Majafa, also a former Orlando Pirates player; and Tumelo Magapi, the former Bloemfontein Celtics and Maritzburg United player as “… a futile and suicidal exercise”.

The Four Stars coach could have just used the very team that went to the semis instead of the so-called stars, said veteran Thomas Satch Manyisa, Oupa’s uncle, who also is a former professional Moroka Swallows FC and Vaal Professionals player.

“As the local organising committee of this big event we are pleased to have hosted it after the Covid-19 lockdown rules had been relaxed, and most of all to have been in the game for over 20 years. We have honoured players Tsantsa Moloto and his cousin Thabiso who is also a coach and have been part of the tournament since the days at the old Mohlakeng Soccer Grounds. Among those we would like to thank is the local media, Randfontein Herald for covering the GREST in the past years,” said Abe.
