Cornerstone hosts West Rand Chess tournament

Over 80 players from approximately 20 schools came together in Greenhills to show off their chess skills.

Over 80 players from approximately 20 schools came together to show off their chess skills during the West Rand Juniors Chess Tournament that was held at Cornerstone Christian School on Saturday, April 9.

Organiser of the tournament, Eazy Tshabadira said this was one of the tournaments planned by West Rand Chess, and it was used to select the teams that represent the West Rand in provincial and national games.

Eazy explained that chess is big in South Africa but the only drawback is that the game doesn’t enjoy a lot of sponsorship, which hinders their plans to take the sport to all areas and make it accessible to those who can’t afford it.

One chess game can last a maximum of two hours. Each player is given 60 minutes to make all his or her moves but the quicker the players make their moves, the quicker the game ends.”

He added that younger players usually finish their games within 20 minutes.

“Saturday’s tournament was a big success; the players had a great time and enjoyed every minute while showing off their skills. Everyone is looking forward to the next tournament.”

Eazy said the game of chess is easy to learn and once you know how to play it, it is quite an enjoyable sport.

Chess is a game that combines fun and learning because it helps with important skills such as decision making, concentration, it improves your memory, and so much more!”
