West Rand Police join forces yet again, arrest 161 for various crimes

Police recently combined an Okae Molao operation with National Police Day. They arrested 161 people and issued 78 traffic fines to the value of R77 800.

Member from all 13 police stations in the West Rand District recently combined an Okae Molao operation with National Police Day, which yielded 161 arrests.

Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye from the District Police’s communications team said the integrated operation on January 27 saw police, Gauteng Traffic and Mogale City Public Safety members working together from 05:30 to 14:00.

“The operation was aimed at curbing criminal activities, and instilling discipline in the communities of the West Rand.”

She said Colonel Jurie Ferreira from the Carletonville Police addressed the members on behalf of the District Police Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana. He told the members to be safe and look out for each other. He also reminded them to adhere to Covid-19 protocols.

The operation focused on all three areas in the District, namely Mogale City (Hekpoort, Magaliesburg, Tarlton, Muldersdrift, Tshepisong, Swaneville and Leratong Village); Rand West City (Bekkersdal, Glenharvie, Hillshaven, Borwa, Westonaria and Randfontein); and Merofong (Kokosi, Carletonville, Khutsong and Fochville).

One person was arrested for impersonating police.

The 161 people were arrested for various crimes, such as:
• One for impersonating a police officer and possession of suspected stolen property
• One for possession of gold-bearing material, and being an illegal immigrant
• Three for selling liquor without licence
• One for dealing in liquor
• 60 for being illegal immigrants
• Seven for armed robbery
• 28 for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm
• Three for business burglary
• Eight for common assault
• One for contempt of court
• Three for contravening a protection order
• Two for drunk driving and warrant of arrest
• Three for housebreaking and theft
• One for intimidation
• One for kidnapping
• Two for possession of drugs and warrant of arrest
• One for possession of gold-bearing material
• Two for possession of stolen property
• Seven for rape
• Three for robbery
• Four for reckless and/ or negligent driving
• One for sexual assault
• Ten for theft
• One for theft out of motor vehicle

There were also 78 traffic fines issued to the value of R77 800 and one fine was issued for opening a shebeen before 10:00. The teams confiscated one single-cab motor vehicle, dagga, tools, money and 115,01 litres of liquor.

Ferreira thanked all the members for their hard work and dedication.

Police also arrested people for being in possession of gold-bearing material.
