Long weekend killing spree: Several shot and killed, stabbed to death at local taverns

Police say several people lost their lives at local taverns this past long weekend by being stabbed or shot dead.

Three suspects have been arrested after several people were either shot and killed or stabbed to death at local taverns in and around Bekkersdal during the Heritage Day long weekend.

According to Bekkersdal Police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the suspects aged 24, 25 and 37 were arrested on Sunday September 26 and Monday September 27.

“These incidents emanated from liquor outlets around Tambo and Silvercity – both are informal settlements in Bekkersdal,” Sergeant Lefakane said.

Bekkersdal Police station commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela condemned the killings and said such violence will not be tolerated.

“Liquor outlet owners must ensure compliance with the regulation at all times to avoid such incidents. Those caught violating lockdown regulations will be punished.”

Colonel Matamela further thanked the community members for providing the police with information which led to the identification of the suspects.

“We will not rest until all suspects involved are brought to book, and face the full might of the law,” Colonel Matamela added.
