The roadblock along the R28 saw two arrested and thirteen traffic fines issued.

With August being a month where women are celebrated, the Randfontein Police unfolded an integrated Basadi operation called Gender equality: Realising women’s rights for an equal future, which was aimed at addressing gender-based violence with activities ranging from prayer, and raiding gender-based violence suspects and those committing crimes against women and children.

The operation was held along the R28 on Friday, August 27.

Bekkersdal Police station commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela led the operation in partnership with other senior officers, members of the Gauteng Traffic Police, Rand West City Traffic Police, and the Department of Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs, Community policing forum patrollers and members from the Youth Desk.

According to Randfontein Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, the operation was aimed at injecting knowledge through awareness, as the public was educated on how to deal with gender-based violence, domestic violence and sexual offences.

Colonel Matamela emphasised wearing the prescribed personal protection equipment and adhering to all the Covid-19 protocols, and she advised members to be vigilant and always conduct themselves with dignity.

“We as woman should guide, lead and stand firm with the support of our male counterparts,” said Colonel Matamela as she addressed the parade.

At the roadblock along the R28 two suspects were arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Thirteen traffic fines to the value of R14 000 were also issued.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court soon.

Colonel Matamela, on behalf of the District Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana, thanked all members for their support.

“Without your diligence and hard work we wouldn’t have been able to make such a big impact,” she concluded.
