DA Ward 7 Councilor Craig Harrison together with other committee members and residents embarked on a clean up campaign in Arend Street in Helikon Park on 1 June .

This comes after numerous futile pleas to the Randfontein Local Municipality to clean up the area.

According to Harrison, they are tired of living in a filthy environment, hence they decided to take matters into their own hands

“We have requested the council to clean up this place on numerous occasions but our pleas continue to fall on deaf ears.

“All they did was deploy municipal workers to cut the grass but they did a lousy job in cleaning up the areas properly.

“They left their refuse bags filled with grass and other rubbish unattended for days on end.

“As a result, people walk all over the bags and in turn, the rubbish gets strewn all over the place,” says Harrison.

Owing to this, these areas turned into illegal dumping sites as residents and passers-by threw rubbish there from time to time.

In their clean-up campaign, the team collected everything from unwanted household items such as television sets to empty tins and paper.

All the collected items filled approximately 65 refuse bags.

“We are trying to do away with the culture of illegal dumping that is becoming a plague in Randfontein.

“We really hope that our efforts go a long way in sustaining a clean environment for all,” says Harrison.

He appeals to residents and the council to come on board and help keep the town clean.
