The West Rand’s Sportswomen of the Year

'Always be yourself and strive towards being a person someone else can look up to' – 19-year-old West Rand Sportswoman of the Year.

Danielle van Wyk, who was named Sportswoman of the Year at this year’s West Rand Women in Sports Awards event hosted in Randfontein said she wants to be a symbol of strength and inspiration to others.

In an exclusive interview with the Herald, Danielle, who has been doing karate since the age of five, said she had never imaged herself being where she is now, especially at the young age of 19.

Describing how she got into karate, she said, “My former instructor paid a visit to my preschool to demonstrate a few sequences of movements, and essentially taught us ‘how to kick butt’.” This piqued her interest.

One of the biggest lessons karate has taught her is to be patient – an invaluable life skill.

Danielle van Wyk said she wants to be an inspiration to other sportswomen on the West Rand. Photo submitted.

“It has taught me to respect my partners, mentors and opponents both on and off the tatami (type of mat). It has made me realise that talent isn’t everything, because you cannot solely rely on it to achieve your goals,” Danielle added.

She went on to say she worked hard towards being an Olympic athlete, as well as helping to set the building blocks for future generations of karateka.

In addition to working hard, she said she was fortunate to have been surrounded by people who motivated and supported her.

In her message to other sportswomen, Danielle said, “We all have idols and role models, but there’s no one out there quite like you. You bring something so extraordinary and unique into this world.

Always be yourself and strive towards being a person someone else can look up to. This should inspire you to achieve your goals,” Danielle said.
