Eskom slams ‘fake’ media reports on disconnecting R’fontein, Krugersdorp

'False media reports have caused unnecessary panic among many customers' – Eskom.

Eskom said its intention to disconnect the power supply to West Rand Power Distributors for owing it R18 786 593,07 will not affect thousands of customers as reported in the media.

According to Daphne Mokwena, the senior manager for customer services in the Gauteng Operating Unit, the planned disconnection, if implemented, will only affect customers from the old mining village, West Village, as communicated by Eskom.

“We are concerned about various media reports that customers in Randfontein, Krugersdorp and Riverlea will be affected by the planned disconnection. This has caused panic among customers in these areas,” Mokwena said.

She added that she hoped that the media would correct this to try to set customers at ease.

Mokwena said the incorrect information comes after Eskom issued a media statement to communicate its intention to disconnect supply to West Rand Power Distributors.

“In the statement, Eskom said it had requested representations and/ or submissions from all affected parties on or before 24 January 2020 as to why or why not it should proceed with the contemplated disconnection of the power supply.

“The entity has not received any representation, presentation, or comments on the matter and if they do not receive any form of submission from affected parties, they will continue with the planned supply disconnection on 20 February 2020, as the there would be no submissions for consideration,” Mokwena said.
