“There will be daily prayer sessions until Friday at the family house, 3 Mzolo Street, Mohlakeng, from 7pm to 8pm,” Dladla said.

Mathebula died in the Leratong Hospital last Saturday at the age of 68.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture has also expressed its condolences to the family.

“We want to send our deepest condolences to the Mathebula family, the boxing family in Gauteng and South Africa. Mr Mathebula was a motivation to young people that no matter where you were born, or under which circumstances, you grow when you are talented; nothing can stop you,” said William Matsheke, chairperson of the committee.

“We are proud that the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation conferred the lifetime achievement award to Mr Mathebula in 2017 and hosted a tournament in 2017 together with the Rand West City Local Municipality and SuperSport to celebrate his life while he was still alive.”

The EFF West Rand Region also expressed its condolences.

Bethuel Munyai, EFF West Rand regional secretary said, “EFF West Rand deepens its revolutionary red banner in mourning the passing away of the Fighter and the former boxing champion of the world.

“His fearsome skills and bravery inside the ring earned him the nickname Terror. He represent the African Black excellence and from his heydays days, he changed the attitude towards African fighters, that Africa can conquer the world regardless of white supremacy.

“He is no ordinary legend; he was an international legend, as the result of which he deserves to be granted an official state funeral category 2. We demand Premier Makhura to do the right thing by engaging President Ramaphosa to grant the Legend an official state funeral category 2.

“His experience and knowledge in boxing were never utilised to the fullest in order to produce and develop more boxers in the West Rand. He frequently said while hobnobbing and Imbibing at Mohlakeng Hostel that, ‘Boxing Academy is needed here in Randfontein to produce another Terror but this government does not care, in particular this municipality of Rand West. They are happy to see us lingering on the streets.’ His abundant boxing skills are in heaven after he was denied an opportunity to plough them back into the community by providing him with the necessary resources.”
