Westonaria crime stats: Sexual offences decrease, truck hijacking worst in years

Westonaria's 2018/ 2019 crime statistics: All sexual offences including rape decreased, yet truck hijackings the worst since 2010/ 2011.

The police recently revealed the crime statistics for 2018/ 2019 and as always, there were the good, the bad and the ugly.

The good news is that sexual offences in Westonaria have decreased by a total of 11,5 per cent.

The bad news, however, is that the number of murder cases remained the same at 20 while the ugly part is that crimes such as truck hijacking, robbery at non-residential premises and malicious damage to property increased by between 30 per cent and 57 per cent.

Below are the latest crime statistics for Westonaria only.

The following crimes have shown an increase:

CRIMES AGAINST THE PERSON:

• Attempted murder by 13,5 per cent (from 37 in 2017/ 2018 to 42 in 2018/ 2019)

• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm by 4,8 per cent (from 63 in 2017/ 2018 to 66 in 2018/ 2019)

• Common robbery by 4,9 per cent (from 41 in 2017/ 2018 to 43 in 2018/ 2019)

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY:

• Robbery at residential premises by 16,7 per cent (from 48 in 2017/ 2018 to 56 in 2018/ 2019)

• Robbery at non-residential premises by 30 per cent (from 30 in 2017/ 2018 to 39 in 2018/ 2019)

• Truck hijacking by 57,1 per cent (from 7 in 2017/ 2018 to 11 in 2018/ 2019)

CONTACT-RELATED CRIMES:

• Arson by 100 per cent (from 0 in 2017/ 2018 to 3 in 2018/ 2019)

• Malicious damage to property by 41,3 per cent (from 104 in 2017/ 2018 to 147 in 2018/ 2019)

PROPERTY-RELATED CRIMES:

• Burglary at non-residential premises by 1 per cent (from 100 in 2017/ 2018 to 101 in 2018/ 2019)

• Stock theft by 15 per cent (from 20 in 2017/ 2018 to 23 in 2018/ 2019)

OTHER SERIOUS CRIMES:

• All theft not mentioned elsewhere by 20 per cent (from 390 in 2017/ 2018 to 468 in 2018/ 2019)

CRIME DETECTED AS A RESULT OF POLICE ACTION:

• Drug-related crime by 11,5 per cent (from 130 in 2017/ 2018 to 145 in 2018/ 2019)

• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition by 35,7 per cent (from 14 in 2017/ 2018 to 19 in 2018/ 2019)

• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs by 16,1 per cent (from 174 in 2017/ 2018 to 202 in 2018/ 2019)

The following crimes have shown a decrease:

CRIMES AGAINST THE PERSON:

• Sexual offences by 11,5 per cent (from 61 in 2017/ 2018 to 54 in 2018/ 2019)

• Common assault by 5 per cent (from 159 in 2017/ 2018 to 151 in 2018/ 2019)

SEXUAL OFFENCES:

• Rape by 8,3 per cent (from 48 in 2017/ 2018 to 44 in 2018/ 2019)

• Sexual assault by 12,5 per cent (from 8 in 2017/ 2018 to 7 in 2018/ 2019)

• Contact sexual offences by 100 percent (from 2 in 2017/ 2018 to 0 in 2018/ 2019)

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY:

• Carjacking by 12,7 per cent (from 55 in 2017/ 2018 to 48 in 2018/ 2019)

PROPERTY-RELATED CRIMES:

• Burglary at residential premises by 8 per cent (from 299 in 2017/ 2018 to 275 in 2018/ 2019)

• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle by 8,8 per cent (from 125 in 2017/ 2018 to 114 in 2018/ 2019)

• Theft out of or from motor vehicle by 9,6 per cent (from 73 in 2017/ 2018 to 66 in 2018/ 2019)

OTHER SERIOUS CRIMES:

• Commercial crime by 12,5 per cent (from 104 in 2017/ 2018 to 91 in 2018/ 2019)

• Shoplifting by 21,4 per cent (from 112 in 2017/ 2018 to 88 in 2018/ 2019)
