W’aria liqour store targeted – three people shot

Westonaria liquor store in Edward Avenue robbed and at least three people shot on Tuesday night.

A manhunt has been launched for a group of armed men who robbed a Westonaria liquor store and shot at least three people on their way out on Tuesday night, 27 August.

Sergeant Audrey Sefara, Westonaria Police spokesperson, said the incident took place at about 7.30pm in Edward Avenue. They are investigating a case of business robbery and attempted murder.

She explained, “A group of men entered the store armed with pistols and demanded cash, liquor and cigarettes. On their way out, they shot at the store security guard and a security guard from a private company. A passer-by was also shot during the crossfire.

The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and property. One of the getaway vehicle used was said to be a Nissan NP200 bakkie. The suspects are heavily armed and dangerous.”

Sergeant Sefara also appealed to the community to assist with information regarding the incident. Information can be forwarded anonymously to detective Sergeant Tshongoyi on 076 912 3313 or to Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, the Westonaria Police station commander, further warned the community to be vigilant and notify the station of any suspicious persons or vehicles they might spot.

He has also condemned the serious and violent crimes taking place in his area as barbaric acts.

This incident is one of the high priority crimes and therefore police officers are working around the clock to trace and apprehend the suspects.”
