WATCH: Librarian on the importance of reading

VIDEO: Fikile Sondela, who opened the Zenzele Impumelelo Library recently encourages all to read.

In October 2017, the Herald reported that 35-year-old Fikile Sondela had a big dream – to open a library.

On Tuesday, 4 June, this dream began to come true, when the Caring Women’s Forum donated a container to Impumelelo Wings, her non-profit organisation. This was the very first step towards reaching her ultimate goal of setting up a library. On Saturday, 20 July, the library was officially opened.

National Book Week (NBW):

It is fast approaching and this year marks a decade of influence on South Africa’s reading culture. The NBW campaign will run from September 2 to 8, with the SA Book Fair from September 6 to 8 at Constitution Hill.

Caxton Local Media, under the banner of Caxton Cares, has joined this year’s campaign as we explore ways to bridge the gap in learners’ access to reading material.

Editors have committed to playing a part in helping local schools and organisations gain access to books as well as to sharing their love of reading and languages with the children in our communities.
