Ongoing rescue mission at abandoned W’aria mine

So far, six of the 20 people who were held hostage by illegal miners at an abandoned mine in Libanon have been rescued

Emergency services are working hard to rescue the remaining 14 victims who were held hostage by illegal miners.

According to Sergeant Audrey Sefara, Westonaria Police spokesperson, 24 men were lured to the mine under the impression of getting employed there.

“The illegal miners took them hostage and demanded a ransom of R10 000 each from their families. One victim escaped and managed to report it to the police on Tuesday, 12 March,” she said.

Emergency services has been working on this rescue mission since Wednesday, 13 March. Six victims have already been rescued. According to to Sefara, three other victims also managed to escape and fled the scene.

“Three arrests were made but according to information, there are more suspects still at large.”

This is an ongoing rescue mission and more information will follow.
