N12 hijackings of major concern to police

Alarm bells are again ringing for motorists who use the N12 following a recent hijacking.

Local police are extremely concerned about the safety of motorists travelling along the N12 after another hijacking.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said that on Monday night, 18 February, a 36-year-old man from Boksburg was the latest victim of a hijacking on the N12 after he had stopped to check his tyres and relieve himself.

“When the victim walked back to his vehicle, he noticed a man next to it who asked for a lift. When he refused, two other men emerged from a veld and attacked him. He fought back and one grabbed his shoulder and bit him.

“In the process, one of the attackers managed to take the vehicle keys and opened it. He forced the victim inside and drove off. The victim was later dropped off next to Cooke Two Mine in Simunye.”

Lefakane added that the several cases of hijacking are a major concern to the police. She said despite intensifying patrols and conducting crime awareness campaigns hijackings remain high.

Colonel Tinus Swart, Bekkersdal Police station commander urged motorists using the N12 to be vigilant and not to stop next to the road.

“Rather drive to a safe place where there are people so you can shout for help or can be heard,” Swart added.
