Six killed, 14 injured in two separate R28 crashes

Two separate crashes on the R28 in Randfontein on Saturday evening left at least 14 people injured and six dead.

Six people have been killed and at least 14 others injured in two separate accidents on the R28 in the Randfontein area on Saturday evening (9 February).

In the first accident, five people were killed and at least 12 others were injured when a taxi overturned several times on the R28 near Mohlakeng Extension 11.

According to Werner Vermaak, ER24 spokesperson, paramedics from ER24 and other services arrived on the scene shortly before 6pm where they found a taxi on the side of the road.

All of its occupants were ejected from the vehicle. Paramedics found five people with fatal injuries. There was nothing that they could do for them and they were declared dead on the scene.

“At least 12 other occupants sustained moderate to serious injuries. The injured occupants were treated on the scene and rushed to nearby hospitals for further medical care.”

Constable Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

“When our police members arrived on the scene they were informed that the taxi lost control after overtaking a truck. The taxi was travelling from Randfontein to Mohlakeng.”

She added that on the same day and while police were on the scene in the first accident, another fatal crash occurred on the corner of the R28 and Harred Road.

“At about 5.30pm, it is alleged a vehicle had skipped a stop sign and crashed into another vehicle. The driver of a white Toyota Avanza was declared dead on scene but some of its occupants got out and ran away. It is unknown at this stage if they sustained any injuries.

“The occupants of the other vehicle, a white Renault were transported to hospital. A case of culpable homicide will also be investigated.”

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police station commander sent his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the accidents.

“The accidents could have been avoided if some of the drivers obeyed the rules of our roads.”

Randfontein Police detectives is asking the public to come forward with any information regarding the occupants of the white Toyota Avanza. The police can be contacted on 011 278 8100.
