Rem netball players shine in Mauritius

They played for the U/12 and U/13 teams, and all of them brought medals home.

Six local netball players recently had the chance to show off their skills and sportsmanship in Mauritius.

Onthatile Modise, Resego Mataboge, Katlego Mafojane, Omphile Moerane, Reaoleboga Senoamadi and Mamello Maphanga took part in a netball tournament hosted by Vision Sport from 2 to 9 October in Mauritius.

All six netball players are learners at Randfontein Primary School. They played for the U/12 and U/13 teams, and all of them brought medals home.

According to Omphile, the biggest challenge was to play with a team of strangers.

“We played in positions that we don’t usually play in. I learned so much about the game, because playing with people I don’t know at all pushed me right out of my comfort zone. I made a few friends too. My team was awarded gold medals for being the overall winners of our age group,” she said.

Onthatile said that they also learned a new netball game called Fast Five.

“It’s a game with only five players and it’s shorter than normal netball games. I am certainly going to teach the netball players in R’fontein everything that I’ve learned,” she said.

For a few of them, this trip was also their first time on a plane. According to Mamello, the flight was a bit bumpy but the weather was nice. “The culture and especially the food in Mauritius was very different from what we are used to. When we weren’t playing netball matches, we were exploring and we also went on a fun boat ride.”
