Canopy theft an issue all over West Rand

Police on the West Rand have issued a warning regarding canopy theft.

Don’t let your canopy out of your sight.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, canopy theft is on the rise.

“The West Rand Cluster management is concerned about the increase in thefts of canopies in some of our policing areas. Bekkersdal, Kagiso, Krugersdorp and Randfontein reported an increase in the number of these thefts,” Ernst said.

She said vehicles are being targeted at parking areas as well as on residential properties.

“It is suggested that canopies are properly locked where possible. They should also be attached with fasteners that cannot be easily removed,” Ernst said.

Suspicions are that these stolen goods are sold, and urged those in the market for canopies to refrain from buying from people who cannot prove ownership.

“Buyers should take note that they can also be arrested for possession of stolen goods,” Ernst warned.

Anyone with information regarding this matter is requested to call Crime Stop on 086 001 0111 or to go to the nearest police station immediately.
