R’fonteiners beware, your favourite food may not be fit to consume

A by-law enforcement operation was recently conducted at some of the shops in the Randfontein CBD by our traffic police. Here's what you should know ...

Food items such polony, vienna and russians being sold at some of the shops in the Randfontein CBD are not fit for human consumption.

This was revealed by Kenny Mampondo, chief of the Rand West City Traffic Department (RWCTD) after his department recently conducted a by-law enforcement operation to determine the quality of the products sold to the public.

“In one of the outlets we raided, some products that had expired were being sold at very low prices,” said Mampondo.

He added that in light of what the raid has revealed, it is very important for people to know the risks of buying such products.

“The danger is that these products are being consumed by people in places that sell kota. You must bear in mind that some of these products can be poisonous and sometimes lead to the death of both children and adults who eat kotas.”

Mampondo said as the operation continues, the health authorities will join the move and awareness will be raised.

“We will ask them to assist in a joint awareness campaign. People should be aware and should not just buy for the sake of buying,” Mampondo said.

He said that when people see the prices of food products being reduced, they should check expiry dates.

“They need to find out whether the items are put on sale because the expiry date is nearing or the item has expired already.”

Mampondo said in some instances, it was revealed that expiry dates had been purposely removed.

“We will not rest – we will keep raiding these shops unannounced, but we are also pleading to the public out there to always check expiry dates on the items they buy, irrespective of where they buy from.

“They should not be excited because they are getting things at a lower price,” Mampondo added.
