Fairy Face Day Care visits police station
The police invited children and parents from the community to visit, to teach them about safety, awareness and good parenting.
Knowledge is empowering. That’s why the Randfontein Police decided to invite children and parents from the community to join a guided tour through the different departments at the police station. The aim was to empower them and ultimately protect them.
On Wednesday, 20 June, 30 children from Fairy Face Day Care in Westonaria, the school’s staff, and some of the children’s parents were taken on the tour, during which they were informed about human trafficking, drug abuse, how to report a crime, who to call when they are in trouble, and specifically how to be safe.
Mmotsi Nobela, from the Randfontein Social Crime Prevention unit, informed parents on good parenting practices to ensure the safety of their children.
Constable Portia Mabala taught the children the song, I am special, which specifically addresses child abuse. It was sung at the tops of their voices.
Visiting the police cells was a special treat. Some of the children were a tad scared, staring at suspects with big eyes, but parents and caregivers ensured that they were comfortable during the visit.
“Randfontein Social Crime Prevention is responsible for informing our communities about social issues which impact on crime, and continuously strives to reach all sectors of our community,” said Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein station commander.
