‘Illegal deposit’ claims surface against municipality

The DA is to lay charges of fraud against West Rand District Municipality officials at the Randfontein Police Station tomorrow.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, 30 May, the DA will lay charges of fraud at the Randfontein Police Station against a number of West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) officials for allegedly making illegal deposits at a bank.

In a statement released by the party on Tuesday, Charity McCord, the DA Gauteng’s provincial media spokesperson, confirmed that Kevin Mileham, MP and DA Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will lay fraud charges against the WRDM officials for allegedly making illegal deposits to VBS Mutual Bank.

“This action follows after 15 municipalities deposited municipal money at the VBS Mutual Bank, in contravention of section 7(3) of the [Local Government:] Municipal Financial Management Act [56 of 2003]. These municipalities now risk losing a large proportion of these deposits and are likely to receive between 10 cents and 40 cents on the rand, or nothing at all.

“Those who approved these deposits must be held to account and the DA will ensure that those who abuse public funds meant for service delivery face the full might of the law.”
