Hijackers nailed in N12 roadblock

Police give chase after hijackers came across roadblock

A 25-year-old man who stopped along the N12 to relieve himself, became the victim of a hijacking.

Members of the Bekkersdal Police arrested the suspects (aged between 30 and 37) shortly after they had committed the crime.

“It is alleged that on Thursday, 19 April at about 10am the victim was approached by two unknown men on the side of the road. It seemed as if they wanted to ask him something. Suddenly one of them produced a firearm and pointed it at him,” said Sergeant Linki Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

He was then forced back into the bakkie and his attackers drove off with him. They took him to a remote area where the third suspect was waiting for them.

The victim was then forced out of his vehicle, blindfolded and forced into another vehicle. The hijackers drove around with him for some time. However, he was surprised when his blindfold was removed and he saw a roadblock ahead of them.

“The victim tried to alert the police but the suspects turned the vehicle around and drove off. The police noticed them and gave chase,” added Lefakane.

Police signalled the driver to stop and the victim told them that his Toyota Hilux loaded with stock had been hijacked by the two.

The vehicle tracker was activated and the Hilux with the stock was later recovered.

The Bekkersdal Police station commander, Colonel Tinus Swart urges motorists to refrain from stopping along the N12 and at least drive to the nearest filing station when nature calls.

He further applauded members of the Mounted Unit for being curious when they noticed the vehicle turning and ensuring that the perpetrators were brought to book. “This is the kind of attitude we expect from our members on a daily basis,” he added.
