Meet country singer Jay cee

Meet new country singer from Randfontein, Jay Cee.

The Herald recently had the privilege of meeting 38-year-old Jay Cee (Hannes Kroukamp), a country and variety singer.

Jay Cee has been singing professionally for three years. He was born in Krugersdorp, and now lives in Randfontein. He sings country songs in Afrikaans and English, and wants to pursue gospel music as well.

He sang at last year’s Randfontein Show, and recently undertook a tour of the Northern Cape. He use to sing at Legends in Randfontein, when it was still open. He has also worked with Billy Forrest and Buddy Vaughn on the latter’s album Visvang Tunes. Vaatjie (from the television series Mollie and Wors) has also performed with him. His music producer goes by the name of Billy BB.

On 8 April, he will be performing with Dr Victor.

His singing talent comes from his family – he started singing in the school choir. He can play guitar, drums and the harmonica. The song that made him famous in Randfontein was his cover of Prince’s Purple Rain.

Jay Cee is a full time singer and actor, and is also studying drama. He loves comedy and likes what Jonathan from Radio Raps does. His idol is Leon Schuster.

He performs at events, festivals, and functions and is currently busy recording his country CD, which will be released at the end of April. His Afrikaans CD will be released in three months.

Two of his favourite songs are Kris Kristofferson’s Sunday morning coming down and Neil Diamond’s I am, I said. He also loves animals and children.

“I like Randfontein because it is more peaceful than other towns,” he said. Jay Cee told the Herald that he believes in the philosophy of not waiting to cross the bridge, but rather being the bridge.

“You must never believe that you are not good enough. Remember, when you are in a storm, you have two options – jump off the boat, or stay on it. There is the calm after the storm to look forward to,” he added.
